Spanish summers can be stiflingly hot, making it harder to choose the right clothes for work during these months. In general, the dress code is more relaxed to be able to cool down, however this leads to many mistakes when it comes to dressing for the office. For this reason, sometimes it is easier to know what not to wear to work during the Spanish summer. In this article we advise you about how to dress for work in summer.

WHAT SHOULDN’T I WEAR TO DRESS FOR WORK IN SUMMER?

Firstly, how to dress for work in summer depends on your company and field of work. Working in a bank, is not the same as working at Google. It also depends on your standing within the company and whether you work in a customer-facing role or not. Leaving that aside, this is what you shouldn’t wear (in general) to work during the Spanish summer:

WOMEN:

  • Very short shorts.
  • Very low cut tops, transparent clothes, tops that show your stomach or very thin straps.
  • Flip-flops. Better to opt for Sandals that cover the heel.
  • Distressed or ripped jeans. While they may be in fashion, it´s best not to wear them at work.
  • Clothes with overt or explicit slogans.

MEN:

  • Bermuda shorts.
  • Sleeveless t-shirts.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO DRESS FOR WORK IN SUMMER?

Once we know what NOT to wear to dress for work in summer, we can look at which options are the best for keeping comfortable when working in summer. As we mentioned before, this depends on the sector and your role in the company, amongst other factors.

WOMEN:

  • Clothes made from cotton, linen, silk and “Chiffons”.
  • Light colours.
  • Enclosed shoes or sandals which cover the heel.
  • Flowing dresses, which if are sleeveless or have straps that can be combined with a light jacket.
  • Loose, flowing trousers.
  • Depending on how formal the workplace is, free flowing or formal skirts.

MEN:

  • Linen or cotton clothes.
  • Light coloured trousers, for example beige or pastel colours. If the company dress code permits, jeans can be used.
  • Long sleeved shirts can be used with the sleeves rolled up, also short sleeved shirts and polo shirts.
  • If it’s necessary to wear cardigans, make sure that they are made from light materials.
  • Enclosed shoes should be used, but it´s best to use moccasins, or even sports shoes if the company dress code permits it.
